Once named University College of the West Indies, The University Hospital of the West Indies changed its name in 1967 and stood as healing well for the greater part of Kingston and St. Andrew. Vendors from the neighboring communities make their way to the outskirts of the hospital to sell their goods to patients and staff of the heath care facility.
Sandra (fictious name) said she has been selling on the streets outside the facility for 38 years. Vendors at the gate have had a warm time for decades as rival political divides, hospital authorities and disorganized taxi men struggle in the conundrum to get a bite of the market.
Dr. Saint Aun Bartlett, who was their MP tried to relocate the vendors in the past but had some challenges making that transition. Today you can see partially dilapidated buildings among the fully stock shops and the busy taxis drivers in the hustle and bustle of the streets. The people on the outskirts of the University Hospital has had bitter sweet memories but what remains even today is the remnants of their yesteryears. It has been a challenging day for me as well as for the vendors and patrons. Finally, showers of rain put a damper on things as the curtains for brought down.
